About this project

Morrow Engineering was retained to assist in the general design, programming, and commissioning of a heavy lift crane barge owned by Dynamic Heavy Lift (a division of Dynamic). This crane barge, the Dynamic Beast, assembled from a 120’x330’ barge and a Manitowoc M1200 ringer crane, was built to be the largest of its kind on the West Coast of North America at the time. It also serves as a highly versatile dockside construction platform and has recently been used in roll-on and roll-off operations of large preassembled equipment.

One of The Beast’s key features is its ballast system, which is designed to hold the crane barge within 0.1 degrees of level automatically as it makes lifts. This allows the crane to operate within its manufactured lift chart, and safely lift loads of up to 900 tonnes. The ballast system also allows the trim and list of the barge to be adjusted manually, allowing the crane operator or other crew members to adjust the barge as needed.

Morrow Engineering designed and implemented the ballast system for The Beast, including sizing the pumps and piping, providing electrical engineering, controls and programming. The Beast has proven to be an excellent asset for Dynamic and sees constant use in challenging construction projects on the West Coast.
